The 1933 film Queen Christina, starring Greta Garbo as the Queen and John Gilbert as the Spanish envoy Antonio is loosely based on the life of the real Queen Christina of Sweden who ruled from 1632 to 1654. Christina, nicknamed the Girl King was the only daughter of King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden who raised her as a Prince instead of a Princess. Christina was educated as a boy, dressed in boy's clothing and even took the oath of office as a King instead of as a Queen. In the film, Christina sets off on a journey to relieve herself of the pressures of royal duty and meets Antonio at an Inn who believes her to be a man as a result of her dress and demeanor. He soon discovers the truth after which the typical Hollywood romance ensues.
